The National Fisheries Institute (NFI)’s traceability strategy has been to align NFI’s members with the broader food community. There is an increased urgency for technology-assisted traceability platforms, due to the labor-intensive recordkeeping requirements of programs like NOAA’s Seafood Inspection Monitoring Program (SIMP). While existing technology service providers are available, linking the complete chain of custody through records still poses a challenge, and verification of the supply chain records is time-consuming. NFI is an official Business Partner of IBM Food Trust. Together, the two entities have undertaken two seafood supply chain pilots. The goal of the pilots is to test new technology that will hopefully help increase transparency, optimize supply chain processes and combat fraud.
